Islamabad, Pakistan (AHN) – Pakistani officials say several suspected U.S. drone attacks killed at least 29 people in Pakistan. The strikes targeting Taliban targets occurred on Tuesday (February 2, 2010).
The drones fired a volley of missiles targeting houses in a several villages in the northwest region of Pakistan, a U.S. ally. The site of the attacks is in Pakistan’s North Waziristan district, known by intelligence officials as a haven for Taliban and Al Qaeda militants conducting cross-border raids on US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan.
It is believed at least eight drones took part in the attack firing nearly 20 missiles.
One of the suspected targets was Sirajuddin Haqqani the leader of the Afghan Taliban. However published reports quote a commander speaking on the condition of anonymity that Haqqani “is alive and was not in the area at the time of the attack.”
The attack reaffirms the U.S. strategy of its assassination campaign against terrorist leaders inside the country originally spearheaded by President Barack Obama’s predecessor President George W. Bush.
