Congressman Schauer Joins The Congressional Pakistan Caucus

Posted - April 19, 2010

(Washington, D.C. 4/19/2010) — Council on Pakistan Relations recently met Congressman Mark Schauer (D-MI) in Washington DC to discuss its key priorities including, regional US approach to South Asia, re-invigorating Pakistan Congressional Caucus, and ensuring that US economic assistance to Pakistan under Kerry/Lugar initiative is wisely spent. After Council’s visit, Congressman Schauer (D-MI) announced his decision to join the Congressional Pakistan Caucus.

Established in 2004, the Congressional Pakistan Caucus is co-chaired by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) and Congressman Dan Burton (R-IN). Currently, more than 40 Members of Congress have joined the Congressional Pakistan Caucus. The purpose of the Congressional Pakistan Caucus is twofold: “(1) To facilitate dialogue between Pakistani Americans with their political representatives in Congress and (2) To improve and strengthen bilateral relations between Pakistan and the U.S.”

The Council on Pakistan Relations strongly supports the goals of the Congressional Pakistan Caucus and applauds the efforts of its Members who take an active role on U.S.-South Asia relations at this critical moment in U.S.-Pakistan relations. The Council would strongly support the Congressional Pakistan Caucus expanding its membership, holding regular meetings with Pakistan American groups, facilitating dialogue between Pakistani Americans and the Obama Administration, and calling on the Congress to hold more Congressional hearings on Pakistan and South Asia.

The Council looks forward to working with Congressman Schauer (D-MI) in re-invigorating Congressional Pakistan Caucus to be a more effective instrument in advancing issues of common interest to the U.S. and Pakistan.

The Council on Pakistan Relations is a pro-America, pro-Pakistan not-for-profit advocacy organization interested in strengthening ties and enhancing mutual understanding between the two nations.
