Last week, the Council on Pakistan Relations had an extended meeting with Senator Carper to discuss his recent trip to Pakistan as well as a broad range of other U.S.-Pakistan issues. Senator Carper told CPR that he had an extremely productive trip to Pakistan and recognized the many challenges facing the government there. He also stated that the U.S. was committed to Pakistan and he personally was focused on doing what he could to improve ties between the two countries.

CPR informed Senator Carper that the Council was established last year to give Pakistani Americans an independent platform to have a voice in the debate over U.S. foreign policy to Pakistan. CPR Chairman said, “in the past, U.S. policy towards Pakistan has been focused on short-term goals rather than taking a long-term strategic view. CPR was formed to hopefully change that.” CPR also told Senator Carper it is working to ensure that U.S. foreign assistance provided to Pakistan under the Kerry/Lugar legislation is focused on large signature projects in the areas of energy, water and agriculture that will directly contribute to improving the daily lives of average Pakistanis. CPR stated that these projects would demonstrate America’s long-term commitment to the country and ease the strong anti-Americanism that is currently found in Pakistan.

Senator Carper expressed a strong interest in working with CPR on these and other issues.

The Council on Pakistan Relations is a pro-America, pro-Pakistan not-for-profit advocacy organization interested in strengthening ties and enhancing mutual understanding between the two nations.
