CPR MEETS WITH THE OFFICE OF CONGRESSMAN DAVID PRICE

Posted - May 25, 2010

The Council on Pakistan Relations recently met with the office of Congressman David Price (D-NC) to discuss U.S.-Pakistan relations and what steps the U.S. can take to improve its image in Pakistan.  The discussion also centered on the importance of promoting democracy in Pakistan as well as the need for the Pakistani Americans community to play a more active role in Washington’s decision making process

During the meeting, CPR Chairman Ashraf Qazi raised the need for the U.S. to ensure that its assistance to Pakistan under the Kerry/Lugar legislation is spent wisely and reaches its intended audience, the people of Pakistan.  Qazi stated that CPR is strongly encouraging the Obama Administration to focus on large, visible “signature” projects in the areas of energy, water and agriculture.  These projects would demonstrate America’s long-term commitment to the country and help to ease the strong anti-Americanism that is prevalent throughout Pakistan.  CPR also discussed the “trust deficit” that has existed between the countries for decades and has led to misunderstanding, mistrust and suspicion.
