Last week, the Council on Pakistan Relations met with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Congressman Mike McMahon (D-NY) to discuss U.S.-Pakistan relations. During the meeting with Congressman Senator Lugar’s staff, CPR Chairman Ashraf Qazi discussed the challenges facing Pakistan and the work CPR is doing to help improve U.S.-Pakistan relations. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the U.S. foreign assistance provided to Pakistan under the Kerry/Lugar legislation reaches the people of Pakistan to demonstrate our long-term commitment to the country. CPR also emphasized the importance of focusing on large “signature” projects in the areas of energy, agriculture and water.

Congressman McMahon, who recently returned from a trip to Pakistan, spoke of the need for the U.S. to “turn a page” in our relations with Pakistan and the need to improve America’s image there. CPR agreed with Congressman McMahon and emphasized the importance of the U.S. adopting a broader strategic approach to South Asia that includes India and addresses the region’s outstanding territorial border disputes, resolves the issue of Kashmir and builds confidence and cooperation between Islamabad and New Delhi.

The Council on Pakistan Relations is a pro-America, pro-Pakistan not-for-profit advocacy organization interested in strengthening ties and enhancing mutual understanding between the two nations.
